Unable to access a particular website

I have a very strange problem here. There is one particular webiste that I cannot access under Ubuntu, using Firefox or Konqurer. The website is www . johnstonesupply . com (sorry for the spaces in the address, I just registered here, and it won't let me actually put a website address in my post yet). The weird thing is, I can access it under firefox using my WinXP box (my personal box is ubuntu, my business box is WinXP). I can't even ping it without getting this error "ping: bad number of packets to transmit". I have no other issues with ubuntu using any other web sites, or other net issues. I can do everything with my linux box like normal. But this one site, I get the error "server not found", I switch over to my business box, and I can load it fine, again using firefox. I contacted the web administrator, and we exchanged a lot of emails back and forth, to no avail. Has anyone ever seen something like this? Can anyone else access this site like normal? I haven't tried another distro, like knoppix, but I did have this problem with my previous distro (still ubuntu, but it was breezy, now I'm using dapper, and I reformatted and did a fresh install with that). Thanks in advance!

Jeremy

Hi.

Weird problem.

Could you try doing:

$ nslookup www.johnstonesupply.com
and
$ host www.johnstonesupply.com

and see what you get?

I resolve www.johnstonesupply.com to 12.25.165.138, so can you try ping'ing that IP too?

Dave

Just tried it out myself. I can get there with Konqueror, but not with Firefox 1.5. I'm using Debian Sarge myself. The page formatting is slightly messed up in Konqueror and asks for shockwave player, but otherwise seems okay.

Hmmm.

I think there may be something odd going on with their DNS entries...
Code:
[0 dave@cronus ~]$ telnet www.johnstonesupply.com 80
telnet: www.johnstonesupply.com: Name or service not known
www.johnstonesupply.com: Unknown host

[1 dave@cronus ~]$ host www.johnstonesupply.com
www.johnstonesupply.com is an alias for www.wip.johnstonesupply.com.
www.wip.johnstonesupply.com has address 12.25.165.138
Host www.wip.johnstonesupply.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
Host www.wip.johnstonesupply.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

[1 dave@cronus ~]$ telnet www.wip.johnstonesupply.com 80
telnet: www.wip.johnstonesupply.com: Name or service not known
www.wip.johnstonesupply.com: Unknown host

[1 dave@cronus ~]$ telnet 12.25.165.138 80
Trying 12.25.165.138...
Connected to 12.25.165.138.
Escape character is '^]'.
^]

telnet> quit
It looks like they have set up an alias from www.johnstonesupply.com to www.wip.johnstonesupply.com , but then not set up a record for www.wip.johnstonesupply.com .
