UMTS - How to

Hi boy!!!
I'm a new Italian user of linux.
To escape from WinZUZZ I've decided to buy SuSE 9.3.
Well.... at the moment, anyway, I'm not able to connect to the web through my new linux system and I still have to use WinZUZZ (but NOT Explorer!!!).
The problem is this: in my town there is no ADSL line and to connect to the web I use the EDGE/UMTS technology through a Nokia 6630 cellular connected to my PC by BlueTooth..... under WinZUZZ platform.....
How can I do the same under my SuSE??

[Excuse me for my awful English: linux World will even make it better!!!]

Check with your ISP, see if they support a PPP connection.

Fede.Lt 05-14-2005 05:41 AM

Well....
To tell you the true I'm not in the conditions to ask my ISP if it supports PPP....
I'm still in the phase in which my SuSE system could not see the modem that is inside my cellular.....

sammyo 05-14-2005 06:50 AM

Ah, then the information someone would need is the type of modem and other hardware specifics to identify driver compatibility.

lilltle progress

I've connected my Nokia with USB cable instead of by Bluetooth and SuSE recognize the modem inside the cellular as a USB device /dev/ttyACM0.
I've tried to set-up an Internet connection copying the process I've used under WinZUZZ platform but neither Kppp or Kinternet were able to connect to my ISP because the modem was not respondig...
How can I obtain the information you need to have to help me, sammyo???
By the way, thanks so much for your attention to my problem!!!

I think now you should start a new question that is more specific, I think you've passed my specific experience. Wouldn't hurt to add the version of the nokia and suse.

Can you connect through a console session using modem commands? Does kinternet return an error message?

What does cinternet --verbose --interface-list return?

The process worked with XP or an earlier version.

Good luck, keep plugging.

Well....
I Hope I can correctly understand what you're writing... I fear my translation of your messages in my own language is not too good...
Anyway, as I've wrote in the first post, the cellular is the Nokia 6630 and the version of SuSE is the 9.3 ... if they are the information you are requiring....
I'm not so expert in linux to be able to connect through a console session using modem commands.
Anyway Kinternet doesn't return any error message, but Kppp tells.... mmm... tells... Now It's time to go to bed.... tomorrow, when I'll restart SuSE it's necessary I'll write Kppp message in a piece of paper.... at the moment I'm using WinZUZZ and I'm too tired to reboot under linux... I'll tell you what Kppp needs tomorrow together with
what does cinternet --verbose --interface-list return :D ZzzZzZzzZzzzzZZzzzzzz......

I think this is the way.

Long time ago you posted your message, but i'll reply anyway.

I used Both Suse 9.3 and Ubuntu 5.04 and my UMTS/WCDMA/3G phone works fine.

I tried both LG U81xx and Sony Ericsson Z800.
I know it works fine with a Motorola A1000.
(These phones are for Scandinavia, but the difference is minor.

When you plug your phone in you should se something like

Found LG U81XX
Serial number 35469524923264

When typing dmesg in comandprompt.

#dmesg

When I used KPPP and did "Add modem" in Yast then i could choose
"LG U81xx" from list of available modems.

Punch in number to call *99# (this is a generic number witch doesn't call your ISP it just tells your phone to connect to data service.

Set it up to receive ipaddress and DNS automatically.

You should now be able to connect to the internet with KPP.
