uh ... starting *any* ftpd on RH 7.2 or 7.3

fresh off the boat, i guess ...

have an old system i want to decommission running 7.2, a freshly installed system on another machine running 7.3 . want to use ftp to transfer some stuff before i shut the old one down. haven't had much of a need for an ftpd for all this time ...

i have wu-ftpd installed on my machine, but between the man pages, various FAQs i can find, posts in this forum ... i cannot find the information that tells me how to start wu-ftpd or any other ftpd.

i've tried one suggestion of 'chkconfig wu-ftpd on' . i've tried simply logging in as root and entering 'root# wu.ftpd' ('wu.ftpd -V' tells me its version & © information ... wu-2.6.1-18) . i've tried in.ftpd .

but the commands issued seem to do nothing. ps x shows no running process that looks like an ftpd .

i know i've done this simply in the ancient past. what am i missing?

you would be better off using NFS or scp.

now it looks like i'm talking to myself, i know ...

very helpful to have the similar threads thing com up right away.

i used another thread that wasn't necessarily related to ftpd to find this guide:

http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz

and specifically the following link to tell me that the ftpd will only show up when someone tries to connect:

http://rute.2038bug.com/node32.html....00000000000000

thanks to acid_kewpie for having this in his sig and pointing to it in his post to another user.

If you
I. insist wanting to log in over ftp as ROOT (not stating it's a closed and secure LAN you're on), and
II. insist using Wu-ftpd, and
III. insist using a vulnerable version at that,
then, yes, indeed you're talking to yourself.
Ppuru's message may strike you as weird because he isn't out to help you fix your problem, but he *does* try to hint at the Greater Evil. In any case he should have been clearer wrt the reasons *why* he gave the answer.

As with all services the SYSV way their init scripts are in /etc/rc.d/init.d.

With NFS or scp, the copied files and directories will retain their permissions and ownerships on the destination system/drive.

I am not sure if this can be achieved via ftp.

Sorry if my post was a fly in the soup.
