Ubuntu ethernet modem router problem

I have a clean installation of Ubuntu on a pc. There is no partition, only Ubuntu on it.

I have tried to make it talk to a Speedtouch usb modem without any success, and was advised to go along the ethernet modem router track. I bought an Addon router and Ubuntu does not see it.

I have wanted to go the Linux way for several years now, but decided to wait until something appeared that would work out of the box. I can build a PC and totally restore a motor car, I can operate a 360 backacter and motor-grader better than most, but software stuff makes shutters come down in front of my eyes.

I have read the related threads to my problem and may as well have been reading a treatise on quantum mechanics for all I understood of it.

The Ubuntu version is Edgy, and I think it is little short of wonderful. Compared with anything after Windows 3.11 it is beautifully simple, and using the graphical interface is logical and clean.

I need an idiot's solution to get me logged-onto my broadband connection with one-tel. Perhaps someone could suggest a broadband modem that works out of the box with edgy.

In every other respect Ubuntu is so good in recognising hardware that is plugged into it. The inability to establish a network connection is a serious flaw in the system. It really should work out of the box...

Can anyone give me an easy fix that does not involve command lines. Preferably a modem that Ubuntu will go straight to work with - I would go out and buy it !

All the best,
Stubbsy

What exactly happens when you connect your modem to your ethernet port on your Ubuntu box? Do you also have any other computer on which this modem works (through ethernet)? If so, what steps did you take to get it to work?

Hello Osor, Thank you for your reply. I have not used the modem router on any other machine. Ubuntu does nothing at all when I plug the router in. Likewise it does nothing when I plug in the usb modem. Other devices it goes to work with straight away, such as a camera.
All the best, Stubbsy.
