ubuntu connect to another machine, connection refused

I am running ubuntu 7.1 and I am not sure how to disable/or allow a port in default firewall. Any one knows how I can set this up? I have installed couple of firewalls. Not sure if they running. Ubuntu doesn't display the bootup log at boot time. How can I display bootup log at start time?

Also can someone tell me how I can open a port?

Assuming grub is the boot manager, edit the boot command line...you probably see "quiet" somewhere in there...take it out.

Why do you have multiple firewalls? That alone is gonna give you problems in itself if they have conflicting rules.

Open a port for what?

I took commented out quiet in /boot/grub/menu.lst, but when I login I get ubuntu orange screen and orange line moving left to right as ubuntu setup other process, but no bootup logs. Not sure why can't get this out at all?
