Ubuntu 8.10- trying to install/configure netgear wireless USB MA101 rev.b

Good evening LQ forum. I am in the process of doing some research on how to resolve this roadblock I am up against, but it can't hurt to ask those who know.

First off, I am new to using Linux and the kernal. Thus far, my linux experience has been limited to installing ubuntu 8.04 and then promptly upgrading to 8.10.

In searching the previous posts, I found references to this same wireless card, but not for the ubuntu distro. Not sure how similar mandrake is to Ubuntu. So, LQ forum, any direction your resources you can point me to would be awesome. I dont even know if I need to find drivers for this device. I was able to run dmesg, per an instruction I read in a previous post. I think the output is telling me I have the Intel chipset.

===>> 13.704220] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: Intel 855PM Chipset

This is as far as I am able to go.

Thanks,

Whalon

Hi wherbjr35, Welcome to LQ. Open a terminal and issue the following.
Code:
sudo lsusb
Please post the output here.
Good luck. ;-)

OK - now I am busted. What I failed to mention earlier is that the reason I upgraded to 8.10 was that I was having problems with my sudo account, in my previous distro. I thought that by upgrading, the problem would correct itself. Shows that happens when you...

So, I tried to run the code you provided, and was prompted for the sudo pw. To date, I have had to establish a keyring pw and also my normal login/admin tasks pw. Neither of those worked when i was asked for the sudo pw. I found some instructions on how to repair sudo in recovery mode. I am currently sitting in recovery mode, and just executed the following
Code:
ls /home
and found that only one account was found. I have also tried
Code:
passwd sudo
and
Code:
adduser sudo admin
...all with no results. Am I correct in thinking that my sudo account needs to be reloaded...it appears to not exist?

I am here now:

Code:
root@username-laptop:~#
Thanks

IIRC, Ubuntu by default uses the user password for sudo.

I believe this is backwards.

Code:

passwd sudo
I think that should be

Code:
sudo passwd
What account was found from this?

Code:

ls /home

and found that only one account was found.
Good luck. ;-)

Is that with the device plugged in? The wireless card that is.
Good luck. ;-)

I believe this is your driver. I suggest reading through all of the material before you get started.
Good luck. ;-)

PeaceDog-I am looking forward to exploring more of the Ubuntu OS and bash kernal. This should keep me busy for a bit!! Thanks for your help and guidance.

Sidebar: My late mother and her family (2 sisters, 5 brothers) grew up in Martinsville, VA -- on the "knob". I hadn't thought about Danville/Martinsville in a while.

It's small world, my wifes family is from Martinsville originally, and I work out of Danville, but the home office is Richmond. I go up every week for a meeting. ;-)
Good luck. ;-)
