Ubuntu 14.04 Wifi Connection Completely Unreliable
 

Hi,

I am very disappointed with Ubuntu 14.04 in general, but more specifically in terms of Wifi connectivity.

I have been on Ubuntu 14.04 for several years, was EXTREMELY happy with Ubuntu 10.04, and am in complete disbelief in so far as I get the impression that those who have worked on 14.04 have no clue as to the user's point of view and don't seem to understand why users DO NOT want to spend their life tweaking.

Here's the problem I have been having for several years: I connect to my favourite network. It works. Suddenly, nm-applet connects to another wifi network all by itself and my favourite network no longer appears inn the list of available networks. All networks appear EXCEPT my favourite network!! At the same time, on my girlfriend's computer, she is still connected, no problem. I deactivate nm-applet and reactivate 30-60 seconds later. The network reappears. I reconnect (manually, it doesn't choose the one I prefer automatically). It seems connected, however, when I search for something in my browser, nothing happens.

Other inconvenience, on Ubuntu 10.04, the system would "remember" my favourite wifi network and connect automatically without me tweaking or going into configuration. On Ubuntu 14.04, it seems that the system tries NOT to connect to my favourite network always choosing another.

Another thing, sometimes this ALSO happens after hibernating.

The only way I've found to solve this problem is to reboot, sometimes I even have reboot twice!

So my questions are:
- What can I do to see what is happening in general when these types of problems occur (commands, commandline tools, etc.)?
- How can I solve my specific problems once and for all?

Seems to me like unstable driver. nm-applet shouldn't try to connect to other networks if they are not saved.
Maybe the situation would improve if you do dist-upgrade, but if even that won't help here are some tips to get Wifi working on Linux.

I've run Ubuntu 10.04 and I have Ubuntu 14.04 running right now on one of my laptops, and the wireless behavior is the same. So I think you've hit some bug. I'm sorry it happened, but I don't think I have anything good to help with.

Unless it is mentioned previously elsewhere, can you please let us have exact hardware details of your machine, including RAM, CPU etc?
