Two network card in the same ip range, why didnt it work?

Hello people,

I have tried the following configuration:

I have a PC with two nic (one with ip 172.20.1.3 and the other 172.20.1.4) but when I use the "ifconfig" only one nic work at once, why?
I tried in Debian 3, Knoppix and nothing. The two network adapters are differents.

As I understand your post, you have 2 NICs in the same computer. Each NIC must be on its own subnet. So, if NIC #1 is 172.20.1.3, then NIC#2 should be 172.20.2.4
