trying to connect to windows network drives

I currently have Knoppix (which is like a linux Demo, it auto-detects hardware and you don't have to make a partition, but you can't really save to the hard drive) but i'm planning on getting a copy of mandrake soon, and i want to know how to connect to a network drive. It's at my school and they are these shared drives, in windows they come up as L:, G:, Etc. i'm new to linux and i want to know if:
a.) is there a simple way to connect to them
b.)is there a set of commands i can run, without having to save on the hard drive.

i have a 64 MB USB flash drive and can carry a small amount of software with me, but i'd like to be able to go to any computer on campus and be able to boot it up and get to the G: or L: drive for demonstration purposes
