trying to connect to wifi with iwconfig, but cannot set key...

I have read the docs, and did the following

lets assume my essid is ABC-WIFI
and that my ASCII password is 1234PASS

sudo iwconfig eth1 mode managed
sudo iwconfig eth1 essid “ABC-WIFI”
sudo iwconfig eth1 key s:1234PASS

My problem is that it fails here, when setting the key...
it reports:

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument.

I have checked that eth1 is indeed my wireless interface, I checked that through iwlist.

Soooo... what should I do now??
Thanks

iwconfig works with wireless devices. Eth1 - is a wired device.
What is output of:
iwconfig

Thanks.

The output of iwconfig is:

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 IEEE 802.11 Access Point: Not-Associated
Link Quality:4 Signal level:194 Noise level:170
Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:89 invalid misc:0

vboxnet0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 can be a wireless interface, not wired, as seems to be your case.

vboxnet0 worries me, have you omitted to tell us that you are referring a "virtual machine"?

I have no experience of VMs, but think that you may have to grant, or give privileges to, your virtual machine access to real hardware.
