Trouble with Named based Virtual hosting in Apache 2

I've been struggling with getting the defult install of Apache 2.0.40 on Redhat 9 to work properly with Virtual hosting.

The Default document root is /var/www/html

I setup a new site with document root of /var/www/ursername/ and with an index.html file in that directory, I endup getting the default Apache Test page

If I setup the sites document root as /var/www/username/public_html/ I get a 403 Forbidden error in my browser.

There doesn't appear to be much useful informtion in the error and access logs.

Snippet from my httpd.conf. This is a server only accessable to my lan, with fully opperational nameserver.

# Virtual host Virtual Host 1
<VirtualHost XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX>
DocumentRoot /var/www/site/

ServerAdmin webmaster@site
ServerName site.lan

ServerSignature email

DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.shtml

<Directory "/public_html/"
AllowOverride none

</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

I usd a domain that does not exist on the net and is being resolved by the same machine's nameserver, but I can't view the index.html in either the DocumentRoot or in public_html. All I see is the Apache Test page

Double checked my logs, when I goto the site involved in the above post, I get "Permission denied: access to /index.html denied"

I've checked the permissions on the directories and the index.html files and it still doesn't work. I made sure the permissions are set to at least 744 on the directories and files.

Hello, doesn't any body have any possibly, even remotely useful comments to make. So far all threads that are similar have been useless.

If you only see the apache test page, make sure that you set up the directory paths properly. Look at Name-based Virtual Host Support.

The access denied part is because the directory is not world readable or readable to the httpd/apache user. Set the directory to 755 instead. 744 does not have the group or world execute bits set.

AAARGH! Stupid Stupid STupid! I feel so stupid. That cured the problem right then. I didn't realise that the directory needed the execute bit set for everyone. Actually I forgot that read and write make 6 not 5 it's read and execute that make 5.

Thanks.

Don't feel stupid. Things like that happen all the time. The most complicated problems are caused by simple things.

thanks, have a new problem and it's probably a simple configuration problem. I add another site and it only displays the Test page and the error log shows "Directory index forbidden by rule: /var/www/site2/public_html/"

I saw another thread talking about a similar problem, but the cure was that the person had in the "DirectoryIndex" part of the configuration they had Index.html, when they should have had index.html. That doesn't appear to be the problem.

Any ideas, I'm still searching.

Can you post your httpd.conf file. It would be easier if your posted the contents.

# Specify a default language. This means that all data

# be marked with this one. You probably do NOT want to set

#
# * It is generally better to not mark a page as
# * being a certain language than marking it with the wrong
# * language!
#
# DefaultLanguage nl
#
# Note 1: The suffix does not have to be the same as the language
# keyword --- those with documents in Polish (whose net-standard
# language code is pl) may wish to use "AddLanguage pl .po" to
# avoid the ambiguity with the common suffix for perl scripts.
#
# Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in some cases
# the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not identical to
# the two character 'Country' code for its country,
# E.g. 'Danmark/dk' versus 'Danish/da'.
#
# Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char
# specifier. There is 'work in progress' to fix this and get
# the reference data for rfc1766 cleaned up.

The orders.site101.org and ianchristie.lan ones are the ones that keep displaying the test page and not what's in their directories.

lan.site101.org works fine.

I had similar problems when i set up my virtual hosts.

For one, I used the Vhost.conf file to put my virtual hosts in, but that doesn matter, you can put them in the main config.

How I solved my problem though is this

<Directory /var/www/site>
ALLOW from all
Options +Includes
</Directory>

Because you are outsite of /var/www/html you have to give permission to use that directory. That should help you out.

Oh and I should mention, if its Apache 2 you should put your virtual hosts in httpd2.conf or atleast use the Vhost.conf file... it solved the problem of the default page being shown.

Permissions are ok, after my first goof, I've made sure they're 755 or 775. I'm still having trouble, the example from Kronos didn't work. I've tried using both webmin and RedHat's own config tool, neither clear up the problem. Also manual editing doesn't help either

So basically your sites aren't resolving properly correct? You will need to have DNS working in order for virtual hosts to work properly. The sites www.ianchristie.lan, lan.site101.org and orders.site101.org should be resolvable, ie, if you ping all 3 of those sites from a client machine, they will return the address of your server. You may also need a virtual host with the server name *. You might need to do something like:

# Default Virtual Host
<VirtualHost 192.168.2.24>
DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"
ServerName *
</VirtualHost>

and have this one come before any of your other virtual hosts. You should move your documentroot directory to a brand new directory on your hard drive if var/www/html contains the apache test pages.
