Angry trouble setting up network

i have a network of two (ahem) computers, which i set up with a cross over cable. the nic im using is reported as "Realtek RTL8139/810X Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC" in windoze. but in linux (redhat 9), its reported as "SURECOM EP-320X-S 100/10M Ethernet Adapter"... i think the former is correct (duh)
anyway, i dont give a damn as long as it works..the thing is that i dont think it works.....
the problem is that iv set up ip addresses for both the computers..when i boot into the pc running linux and type "ifconfig" , it shows the correct ip add. for this machine.
pinging the other machine gives :

[root@mayank root]# ping 192.168.1.4
PING 192.168.1.4 (192.168.1.4) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.1.2 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.2 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.2 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable

--- 192.168.1.4 ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 0 received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 5025ms, pipe 3
now, i send the OTHER machine into standby: then i wake it up again...what happens on pinging is:
[root@mayank root]# ping 192.168.1.4
PING 192.168.1.4 (192.168.1.4) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.4: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=0.312 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.4: icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=0.205 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.4: icmp_seq=3 ttl=128 time=0.295 ms

--- 192.168.1.4 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2030ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.205/0.270/0.312/0.050 ms

whats going on??? the drama is repeated every time i reboot...
and no, this isnt a problem with the wires or the NICs , they work without a hiccup in windoze!
help!

This is a guess, but it could have something to do with the duplex of your ethernet card. Setting one NIC to full (or half) might solve the issue.

Setting the speed and suplex of a card is dependant on the card and if the driver supports doing such a thing.

You need to find out what driver the card is using, then investigate if there is an option to set the speed/duplex for that driver.

As an example, check out this thread:
