Question transmission problem--port is (always) closed (ubuntu)

This semester I register a user on the school's network system. The network speed is really fast when I download some files (simply using "save as") and watch videos (can reach 3mb/s). but when I download with bittorrent client (transmission), the speed never passes 20kb/s (the sources are good and transmission has already collected with many peers).

In transmission, the port is always closed. Is it the very reason that causes my low speed? If so, how could I get my port forwarding. I have tried my numbers, but it seems that my school's firewall have killed them all.

The ultimate problem is the bt download speed is very very slow. I have tested on my friend's computer (who is using the same school network system but on windows and using another powerful bt client), he doesn't meet such trouble. So if someone would offer me a good advice to improve the speed, that's really OK.

some information:

ubuntu 8.04
transmission 1.34

The school's admin have probably done what I would do on a private network that size - interfere with all P2P traffic unless a machine has special approval to use it.

Try running the same BT client from windows on your connection. If you still see the same problem you are s.o.l.
