transfering non-regular file using 'scp'

Hi all

I've been wanting to be able to generate large amounts of ethernet traffic specifically using ssh/scp. My idea was to do:

"scp /dev/urandom user@othermachine:/dev/null"

but scp replies with "/dev/urandom: not a regular file"
I know there are other ways of generating network traffic, but for multiple reasons (the least being that this has been bugging me for a while) I want to use scp.

Any advice on what I am doing wrong?

If you must use ssh transport, you can use the command:

cat /dev/urandom | ssh userid@host "cat > /dev/null"
