Is there someone out there who can help me in setting up a file transfer (Movie/Audio) from a Linux Mandrake 10.1 base unit to a Windows XP base unit. Both units are hooked up to a Modem/Router via ethernet, and a KVM switch. My Mandrake unit has 2 CD Writers/RE-Writers, I was looking at getting one of those USB flash pens, would that work? Also looking into getting a USB external hard drive, again would that work? I'm sure that there must be a way of transfering files through the LAN Modem/Router. Any suggestions? I'm a newbie with linux and any info would be appreciated (step by step).

Your easiest bet would prolly be to ftp the files over LAN. I dont know even abit how to get XP lanned (damn I hate those wizards that dont do anything.. (, but in linux its dropdead easy.
As root:
And voila, your computer is LANned with the internal ip 192.168.0.2 on interface eth0:0

Then just hook up the xp in the same network, and try to get it in the same ip range.. (; Perhaps samba would be a good way to communicate with the XP if your not comfortable with ftpd, but ftpd is alot easier, trust me.. (:

The usb pen / drive would be easy to set up yes, but ofcourse takes extra investment. Anyways, of you go that way, heres a starter-guide:
And if all goes well, the usb device is mounted at /mnt/usb
If you get errors, use dmesg to track down the correct dev.

You could also try setting up samba on your linux machine. This is the easiest way to share files between a windows and linux machine.

samba comes with very good documentation and help files so it will be very easy for you to set it up.

Other options are ssh, using a floppy , telnet and NFS ( this requires a windows based nfs client to actually work).
