telnet 110 fails from remote machine

Hi,

I am working on RHL 8.0. From the server, I can telnet to 110 (pop3d), but when I try to telnet from a remote machine (windows 98, telnet machine_ip 110), it says "Connection failed. Could not open a connection to the machine". The hosts.allow and hosts.deny are not containing any IP.
Please help.

Check your firewall rules. You must allow incoming and outcoming packets on this port.

Be careful to not allow everybody to use it because telnet has a long history of insecure exploits.

Hi andrecbarros,

I had done a fresh installation of RHL 8.0 and never set any firewall rules. Will there be any default firewall rules ? How to see the rules and modify it ? (telnet (23) to the linux machine from any machine is working fine, and I can ping too. Alone "telnet machine_ip 110" is not getting through. )
Please help

Hi all,

I have identified the problem. Andrecbarros was true. By default, the iptables are set for smtp, http, ftp, ssh and telnet only. The other ports are on REJECTED list. I have added the pop3 port on the iptabels ACCEPT list and now it is working. Thanks for all supports.
