tcpdump does not capture all packets

I run tcpdump on my PC, but it does not seem to capture all packets. After i have opted out with a CTRL-C, the result shows thousands of received/dropped pckets and just one or two captured ones. Is this because my NIC is not in a promiscous mode? How do i check that? what could be a possible solution to see all packets?

I am using Kubuntu 6.06, kernel 2.6.15-28-386, tcpdump v3.9.4, libpcap v0.9.4

Thanks

tcpdump does promiscuous mode by default, what is the command you're actually running here? can you show us the full output (well... except the list of captured packets...)
