Suse10 Samba Server not letting windows logon!

Hi,

i've recently set up my Suse 10 server to stream my mp3s over the web at controllable bitrates so that i can listen on any connection, anywhere i like...

Anyways, i set up the server honkey dorey, and i've bought a dedicated 100GB hard disk for my CD collection to rip onto. I went to transfer the first part of the collection onto the mounted and shared music disk via a windows machine, but it asked me for a password to log on to the samba server. Now, i dont remember setting a specific password for samba, and i figured it would probably take the root username and password, but to my horror it wouldnt.
I've had to delve in through remote desktop to try and sort it out but i dont have a clue whats going on, since the rights on the drive are 777, and its perfectly accessible by the linux box.

Any samba experts care to offer up their kind knowledge to help in my canundrum?

Martin

Samba

You need to use the addpasswd (I think that's what its
called) to add the linux user to Samba. The other
alternative is to set security in the smb.conf [global]
section to 'share' instead of 'user' then no passwords
are needed. Also set the directory share to
'browseable = yes'.

Unhappy

i've tried setting the security to share.. and the share is 'browseable'.. but its still throwing the ominous windows xp password box at me. Now, i figure it could be something to do with the way Windows treats the usernames.
When i access the drive from explorer, it comes up with an inactive username box with '192.168.2.5\guest' set in it. This cannot be changed. I've tried the root passwords in the password field but it doesnt accept it.

When i try to map the drive, you can log in with a different username and password - so i tried that. No luck there.. my root username and password were rejected too. It lets me try twice with username as root, and then it changes it to 'kalon\root'. Kalon being the name of my windows box.

the root username and password is set in samba in the YaSt control centre, and the password file contains these usernames and encrypted passwords. I've already checked that.

do you have any other ideas?

Martin
