Did you use modules4 disk after the boot disk?

These are floppy's right? The SuSE boot floppy will bring you to a page were you may load a modules into memory. Looks like thats' what you did from what I read. But in SuSE the module disks are 1-4 e.g. modules1, modules2 and so on... I think you have to load them in order. But read the README in /boot under the mirrors.

Not sure with suse but with redhat there is an admin tool under system settings that shows all the services that are running. it lists all the services such as httpd, smbd, nmbd... (you know all the useful daemons). Suse may have something similar. Also you may want to pop in the install cd and check if the package is installed. With rh it is optional because for us with desktops it is not necessary. Hope this info helps.
