SUSE: 'modprobe' on bootup.

I have an SMC 8416BT card (smc-ultra) running on SuSE 9.1 and the card isn't being detected upon bootup. I have tried the "modprobe.conf" with both i/o, irq and without but it never configures upon bootup. Although when I run it from the command line as 'modprobe smc-ultra' it picks up just fine. I am sort of awkward with the runlevel type on SuSE since I am coming from slackware.

Also, if anyone knows of any good SuSE docs, please let me know. Most of the admin/support stuff brushes over alot of areas.

1. create a file, lets say

vi '/usr/local/startup.sh'

and just put 'modprobe smc-ultra' without quotes in this file.

2. make it executable
chmod +x /usr/local/startup.sh

3. now open the file 'rc.local'.
It would be there in /etc/rc.d/ (This is where it is in Red Hat ...note this path/file may vary according to distro)

4. In this file just add the following line at the end
/usr/local/startup.sh

Thats it....now your module will be loaded everytime your machine boots...!

an easier way to do that would be to put the commad you want to run at start up (modprobe ..whatever) in /etc/init.d/boot.local

Have fun!

Thanks for the feedback guys! Although, I want to find the SuSE way of doing it and actually fix why it isn't loading upon bootup. "rc.local" doesn't exist on the SuSE distro and the "init.d/load.modules" is more for loading it directly from the kernel. I am wondering if I should just rebuild the kernel with the 'smc-ultra' support natively.

Yast > System > /etc/sysconfig Editor, open System, down and open Kernel, Second option MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT click this with your mouse, enter module name on right

Think this is the Suse way

Thanks for the reply. Looks like this was the silver bullet. 'ifconfig' now shows that eth0 is loaded and with the proper params.
