Subnet On Linux

Hi all,

I have scenario, where my gateway exists 10.191.40.x/24 subnet and my desktop is lying on 10.191.40.8/29 subnet. When I given default gateway of other subnet linux will not taking this, where as windows is taking that thing. Some people told that the Linux will not understand other subnet. Is there is any kernel update to that to understand the Linux box other subnets.

Thanks,
Srikanth

per your description, you subnet range is 10.191.40.8~15, I'm not sure whether your gateway exists in the same subnet.

I have no idea why Windows works with the "weird settings".

You have two IP subnetworks. The first, the one at your gateway, is 10.191.40.0. Your linux system resides on subnet 10.191.40.248.

I am assuming that the 10.191.40.0 subnet is the inside of the gateway where your linux and windows systems are connected. If so, your Windows system is malfunctioning. A host with a mask of 255.255.255.248 is communicating with another host with a mask of 255.255.255.0 without the assistance of a router. That is not correct. Why not change the 2 systems to the 10.191.40.0 subnet? You can keep the current ip addresses, but you need to change the mask to 24 bits, i.e. 255.255.255.0.
