Subnet Mask

Hi,

I have some doubts about setting subnet mask.
How will I validate my subnet mask and the IP which I have to set using ifconfig.

For eg:

If I set an IP address say, 10.0.3.90 and if the subnet mask I set is 255.255.255.0. I wont be able to ping the machine which has an IP say, 10.0.0.200.

So before setting any IP while programming , how can i check whether the IP I set is valid for a particular subnet mask .

not really sure what you're after, but i frequently use sites like http://jodies.de/ipcalc to see subnets interpretted in terms of number of hosts, maximum and minimum ip addresses etc... is that what your'e after?
