Stopping VPN Client

Here's my problem:
On my linux box, I connect to a remote machine via VPNClient.
I do some stuff
Then I quit VPN Client by simply closing the terminal window
I then move to my windows computer and attempt to connect to the same remote machine via VPNClient, but it hangs.
I never get to the username/password prompt.

This tells me that VPN Client on the linux box has not really disconnected.
I do a top command, but other than looking for a process named VPNClient or such, I don't know what to look for.
What can I look for? Is there a what to more decisively disconnect VPNClient?
