I would suggest to contact the IT department.
Seems to me you are not allowed to go outside.

Man those addresses are so f..... up that it looks to me like those IT folks don't know what they're doin' or/and that web page is outdated.

Try to use 128.113.192.254 as gateway and DNS server and 128.113.192.XX - > put any number between 2 and 253 here, as internal address in your static IP configuration. You see, you had 2 different netmasks also, try to use both in the counfiguration. Also, check what your broadcast address might be.

If that doesn't work you'll need to talk with campus IT.

Ok...thanks for all the help. Yeah, I would tend to agree with you about campus IT. I'll give them an email, and see if they can't figure it out. Thanks again to everyone!

I know it's been a while since this conversation - however I've had the same experience (only I'm at home - not on a college campus). I couldn't get Ubuntu to operate the internet with a static IP address (although DHCP was fine).

I think I've solved this by installing and using the tool 'network-admin'.

Ubuntu-9 has offers 'nm-connection-editor' and I simply couldn't get that to set up a static IP address.

I think 'network-admin' was installed by default on Ubuntu-8, however it's not installed on 9. Use the terminal command 'network-admin' and you'll be told how to get it installed. 1 minute later everything was working. It even added itself to the System/Administration menu.

Anyway I hope that helps you - or somebody else wondering about this puzzle.

The problem was actually on the IT admin end...the static IP they gave me wasn't playing nice with my computer. I requested another one, and it works fine now. Thanks to all that helped, it was greatly appreciated.
