ssh without identity files

I'm able to successfully login from one machine to another using ssh even though neither the client nor server have HOMEDIR/.ssh/identity or HOMEDIR/.ssh/identity.pub files. (In fact, the .ssh directories are empty.) Aren't these required?

If not, where are the keys stored, and what's being used to ensure the traffic is encrypted?

(Btw, should those files be on the client or the server?)

Thanks.

If the SSH server is configured to allow password logins, then you don't need to have identity files.
