SSH: Timeout

Hi guys,

i have been connecting to my servers via a certain gateway with no timeout problem until recently when the router was changed. Now it timesout. Can't seem to find any settings on the router to affect the timeout.

Is there anyway on the server end to prevent the timeout?

I last asked about this in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=434387 so its kinda a followup.

Currently, what I do is just run 'top' to get it going. But it'll be a bonus if someone can shed some light on this.

thanks!

there's no log in the router other a very minute limited security log which shows about 15 lines only.

I have the same problem when sshing to remote servers. Something between me and them will kill the conn on idle which is quite irritating. I also will run top to keep the conn alive - when I remember! The worst part is I do not know which device is doing the hanging up. Is it my local DSL modem or is it my remote firewalls?

Which log should I check for at the server end, with regards to ssh connections?

cehck in /var/log start with
grep -lr sshd /var/log
that will list all log files containing the string 'sshd'
which is you ssh server.

also a good start is /var/log/auth.log

gernerally /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog are also a good place to look -
just by looking at the log file names you can usually find out if they could have usefull info for you.

If you're running a 2.6.17 kernel, execute this as root:

sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=0

Then retry your stalling connections.
