ssh testing question

Hi folks,
I have set up my ssh server and can connect OK from a remote location. How do i test my own server locally? I can't ssh to localhost or to my 'myname.no-ip.biz' address (which points back here). I keep getting 'connection refused'.

Also after connecting thorugh ssh how can i start up a graphical interface? I know i can use vnc to connect from the start but i would like to first connect by ssh and then start a gui by command.

What do you mean by "graphical interface"? If you just want to be able to use X applications, then just make sure to forward X when you ssh (use the "-X" flag on older SSH or the "-Y" flag on newer versions). You probably won't be able to start a window manager or a full-fledged desktop environment with this method, since it will complain that there is already a window manager running on the X server.

P.S. why can't you just connect by ssh and then start VNC separately later?

Thanks looop, that helps me.
I am a recent windows convert, so excuse the language.
Using putty on an xp machine i can ssh into my fedora 4 box at home.
For full remote access I see now that i will have to start something like tight vnc separately.

Are you saying that i can connect using putty and forwarding X, then start up an application?
The plan is to connect from the xp machine back to my box at home. Then start an x application (ftp) remotely.

Yes, you will need an X server for Windows. These are the open-source implementations I know:
* Cygwin (which provides a Linux environment for Windows, with command line and standard Linux tools) includes an X server.
* Alternatively, there is Xming which provides an X server without the whole Linux environment.

To forward X in the initial Putty screen you go to Connection -> SSH -> X11 -> Enable X11 forwarding. The X server needs to be also running for X applications to display.

Thanks very much for your advice. I'll give it a whirl.
Last night i found an rpm for freenx which also offered a windows client.
If this doesn't do the trick i will look into Cygwin

Thanks again
