ssh secure connection refused

Sorry if cretinous question - confused newbie.

Doing: (on client)
debian:/home/lugo# ssh 192.168.1.2
Secure connection to 192.168.1.2 refused.

Doing:
debian:/home/lugo# ssh localhost
Secure connection to debian refused.

Trying to network 2 computers via ethernet cards and crossover cable.

Firewall disabled on client, I think.

Called the server 192.168.1.2 and the client 192.168.1.1. lo and eth0 up on both computers. sshd up on server.

Thanks any suggestions.

Is ssh running on your 2 computers? You can check with ps aux or you can use netstat -nlp to see if anything is listening on port 22. Can you output ifconfig and and iptables -L. Can you ping between them?
