ssh forwarding - how to setup for DB access ?

Hey,

I need to access a DB from my computer. The DB can be accessed over the network, but that particular ip is blocked by a firewall. I have ssh access to another comp B, which has unbriddled access to the DB's ip. I don't have root access on comp B.

I know I should be able to access the DB through B by setting some sort of tunnel or port forwarding rule, but I don't know what to do exactly ... maybe you could help me out ?

My main aim :

(comp A) ------ XX --- > DB (blocked by firewall )
but (comp A) ----->(comp B) (via ssh)
and (comp B) -------> DB (no firewall )

I want to get (comp A) ---- [ssh magic] ----> DB

any help would be appreciated !

thanks

I guess my first question is what are differences between comp A and comp B aside from the firewall blocking comp A. I'm assuming the software needed to work on the database resides on comp A. At that point I think it could become an application issue, but I believe there is a way to set an iptables rule on comp B to forward ssh traffic to the DB. That said I think the ssh magic will have to take place on comp B, in the form of a forward rule but without root access this could be a problem.

I thought that I could bypass the application issue by just telling the application to use

B's IP:<random port>

as DB server. That port is forwarded by B to the DB server.

Can there be no forwarding without root access?
