ssh connection; explanations, please?

I've used a network in my home just a few weeks now..it's one kind of a test, actually, and one of the machines (the one that connects to net) is without screen, keyboard, mouse etc. so that the only way I can tune or update it is connecting to it from another machine - this is where ssh comes into picture.

now I'd like an explanation for my little "problem"...I use mainly my Athlon to connect to the machine I described above. from Linux (my Athlon is a dual-boot at the moment, altough I don't know for how long) I can connect to my "net-pc" via ssh easily, and do whatever I want with it - no problems there. but when I boot my Athlon to an old win98se (yes, it's the very same pc but only different os...this is what's interesting) and try to make an ssh-connection to the net-pc using putty (or any other app, really) I only get something like

"Can't connect to xxx.xxx.x.x: Unknown network error"

where xxx.xxx.x.x is the ip of the net-pc. I've made sure the ip's are correct, I can use the win98se in the network allright (I tested it with another windows), all lights are normal, cables connected and so on. I've double checked that in the net-pc there is an entry in /etc/hosts.allow that allows this pc to connect (and in linux, as I told, it works) to it so I can't see any source for this problem...still, it just don't work.

so what's wrong with this. how can a different OS cause me to have a failed ssh-connection, altough everything I can imagine should be right? please, if you know about this, tell....not that I would use my windows a lot, but it would be nice to know what the heck is going wrong...

every piece of help is appreciated...

I haven't used putty in a while (I like the ssh client from ssh.com better), but I think it is possible to activate logging. Also, check the loggin on the machine you are trying to connect to, perhaps run ethereal to see if the ssh session even manages to find its way to your linux box.

I am not sure that windows 98 supports an ssh connection with out software installed and running. I believe that this is a add on.

hmm..could it be so, phatboyz? :/ damn, I'm going to have to check that out. and ReefShark, good you mentioned ethereal..I have it but didn't think of it until now...there's only the problem that I don't have a screen and/or keyboard for the net-pc, so it makes things a bit more difficult, since I hate changing the plugs from one pc to another..

still..I guess that's the only chance :/ anyway, thanks for advice

Phatboyz is correct. No version of windows includes an ssh server.

You only need an x-server to pop new windows (tunnel). Putty will allow you to open a terminal. I think by default, putty uses telnet, not ssh. Check to make sure the ssh button is checked.

Good point colnago !!

Buuuutt, let's not go too far of the error message!!!

Telneting to a non open port would have make a cannot connect error...

Well IMHO I am thinking more about a driver thing... Maybe your 98 nic driver is loading the car at 10 mbps and Lnx does it at 100 Mbps... Then you might have to resset you hub/switch/other nick to sync speed.... Well that's only an example of what a driver's dofference could imply...

Dont give up!!

nope, I don't think it's the speed...I use a hub between these two machines so it lowers the speed to 10mbps, instead of 100...

colnago, yes I only would need a terminal...and I checked in putty that the ssh -radio button is checked. altough it didn't give anything different whether I tried telnet or ssh :/ the same error msg just continued to come.

also, I can ping the other pc..no packet losses. so the connection goes, but for some reason ssh/telnet/anything just doesn't seem to get through or something.

thanks for your ideas..I would just need a bit more or them I think hopefully this one will get solved. windows always gets me irritated, just because of this sort of things...
