to use SSH for the first time, start the service with (in Fedora, I think

service sshd start

this will generate keys if necessary and start the server.

As far as catting sshd_config goes, you must be in the folder or provide the proper path.

The path will be something along the lines of:
/etc/sshd/
/etc/ssh/
/etc/openssh/

ellaborate if necessary.

I dont have a /etc/sshd folder or a /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Also when I say service sshd start, it complains sshd:unrecognised service. What do I do now?

which ssh shows /usr/bin/ssh but which sshd doesnt come up with anything.

thanks

To start a service you must be root , otherwise you will always get the same reply

In FC6, the file is obviously at /etc/ssh/sshd_config but has privileges of 600 for root, which means you won't be able to see it if you're a regular user. Make sure you are root:

Code:
[joe@fedora ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@fedora ~]# nano -w /etc/ssh/sshd_config
should be fine. Make sure you exit the root prompt when you're done.
