Question Squid not starting.....

After reading various tutorials and documentation i have now compiled and installed the squid with following options ::: ( Note::: I am trying to implement transparent proxy :: )I have compiled the squid with the following option:::
Code:
# ./configure --enable-linux-netfilter --enable-async-io --enable-snmp
The squid version I am using :: squid-2.4.STABLE7
It was installed without any errors (make and make install)

Now the problem is when I try to start squid, it does not start and give a error messege::
Error Meesage is below::
Code:
 Startup: Thu Sep 25 21:34:25 IST 2003
FATAL: getgrnam failed to find groupid for effective group 'nogroup'
Squid Cache (Version 2.4.STABLE7): Terminated abnormally.
CPU Usage: 0.008 seconds = 0.000 user + 0.008 sys
Maximum Resident Size: 0 KB
Page faults with physical i/o: 291
Do any one has any idea why this message appears;::

My new squid.conf is below :: Not much changed but little:::
Code:
cache_mem 16 MB

maximum_object_size 200 KB
cache_dir ufs /cache/squid 2000 6 256
cache_access_log none
cache_log none

acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
acl manager proto cache_object
acl localhost src 127.0.0.1/255.255.255.255
acl mgsoftbase src 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
acl SSL_ports port 443 563
acl Safe_ports port 80 21 443 563 70 210 1025-65535
acl Safe_ports port 280 # http-mgmt
acl Safe_ports port 488 # gss-http
acl Safe_ports port 591 # filemaker
acl Safe_ports port 777 # multiling http
acl CONNECT method CONNECT

http_access allow manager localhost
http_access deny manager
http_access deny !Safe_ports
http_access deny CONNECT !SSL_ports
http_access allow mgsoftbase
http_access deny all
icp_access allow all
miss_access allow all
cache_mgr root@mgsoftbase.net
#visible_hostname mgsoftbase.mgsoftbase.net
#unique_hostname mgsoftbase.mgsoftbase.net

httpd_accel_host virtual
httpd_accel_port 80
httpd_accel_with_proxy on
httpd_accel_uses_host_header on

http_port 3128
When I installed the proxy from rpm it was strating normally but was not doing what i want so I have to use the proxy installed manualy:::

Here I am not able to start the squid by typing squid at console..
It shows command not found...

In some tutorial i found that it can be started by :::
Code:
/usr/local/squid/bin/RunCache
And yes it is starting from there but giving the same problem...

Well I am trying to figer out the problem and i found that it is not with cache... (I think its a complete different story)
I will tell you here that wht exactly the problem , well I am still working on it..

Thanx for reply...

Now I have moved further...in configuring the squid...
Actually I am following various tutorial about Proxy and transparent proxy. The tutorial is at the following link..... http://squid-docs.sourceforge.net/latest/book-full.html
(I have specified this if you want to know what is I am doing and y!)
Note::: If see that ::: Then please not the Chapter 4.. I have done that specially :: Now my problem of user group id is solved but... It is now giving no errors but not starting..........

Problem :: Squid try to start but get aborted and again try to start but get aborted, it is doing this 2 times in a second , the error output log is below....and it keeps on showing this untill I stop it.

Code:
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:52:13 IST 2003
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:52:28 IST 2003
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:52:44 IST 2003
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:52:59 IST 2003
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:53:15 IST 2003
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:53:31 IST 2003
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:53:47 IST 2003
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:54:02 IST 2003
Startup: Fri Sep 26 23:54:18 IST 2003
My configuration file is little changed (squid.conf)
Code:
cache_mem 8 MB

maximum_object_size 200 KB
cache_dir aufs /cache/squid 2000 6 256
cache_store_log none

acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
acl manager proto cache_object
acl localhost src 127.0.0.1/255.255.255.255
acl mgsoftbase src 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
acl SSL_ports port 443 563
acl Safe_ports port 80 21 443 563 70 210 1025-65535
acl Safe_ports port 280 # http-mgmt
acl Safe_ports port 488 # gss-http
acl Safe_ports port 591 # filemaker
acl Safe_ports port 777 # multiling http
acl CONNECT method CONNECT

http_access allow manager localhost
http_access deny manager
http_access deny !Safe_ports
http_access deny CONNECT !SSL_ports
http_access allow mgsoftbase
http_access deny all
icp_access allow all
miss_access allow all
cache_mgr root@mgsoftbase.net
#visible_hostname mgsoftbase.mgsoftbase.net
#unique_hostname mgsoftbase.mgsoftbase.net

httpd_accel_host virtual
httpd_accel_port 80
httpd_accel_with_proxy on
httpd_accel_uses_host_header on

http_port 3128

cache_effective_user squid
cache_effective_group squid

#ignore_unknown_nameservers on
Now what is the problem... well I am enjoying while I learn new and newer thing during the configuration of squid.. But It has taken so much time.......

cache_effective_user squid
cache_effective_group squid

Do a grep -i squid /etc/passwd and grep -i squid /etc/group and see the user and the group squid exist in those files. on the other hand You can try changing it to
cache_effective_user proxy
cache_effective_group proxy

Which (proxy) should be there by default in most of the Distros.
