squid issues or what? - LAN backup server setup problem

Folks,

We have a LAN mixed with
Windows and Linux, the server as a gateway runs Redhat 9.0 with squid service
enabled as proxy, twp ethernet cards are used, one hooked to the Internet, one to
the LAN, and everything runs just great. Now we are attempting to setup a backup
server in case the orginal server is down, the backup server has exactly same
network configurations for those 2 ethernet cards, and the squid configuration file
is also the same, now when we switch the original server to the backup server,
we cannot open the brower's page, any page in the Internet, while we still can ping
itself, ping outside, why?

Thx a ton,
HTM

Have you done thourough checks, ipchains iptables firewall settings,

Tell Redhat that eth0 is a trusted device and turn off your firewall.

maybe I dont get your network topology,

4 ethernet cards right ( 2 computers) ?
1 main server
1 backup
right yes?

our LAN configuration

It is not that complex like RAID 1, just 2 cards, when testing our backup server,
we just replace the orijinal working server with the newly configured backup server,
firewall setting is also kept same, the highest level with only http allowed

eth0: real IP address
net mask: 255.255.255.252
eth1: 192.168.1.1
et mask: 255.255.255.0

I double checked all setting, nothing is different, and I assume there is no difference
between eth0 and eth1, since I can just swap those 1 lines.

Thx,
HTM
