Speedtouch issue with Mandrake 10.1, 2.6.11.7 kernel, usbfs

Hi all,

I've changed my kernel from 2.6.8.1-24mdk to 2.6.11-6mdk. The new kernel is better, except that I'm having some USB problems, especially with my Alcatel Speedtouch 330 (I know ... get a real router). But, for the time being, here's the problem:

Configuring the modem using speedtouchconf.sh from the speedtouchconf-10-Nov-2004.tar.gz package works fine, and the modem connects to the internet. However, if - after a reboot - I try to connect with "/etc/init.d/speedtouch start" or if I break an active connection and try "pppd call adsl" the modem will not connect and my logs fill with lines containing:

usbfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed

Trying to mount usbdevfs devices manually returns:

mount: fs type usbdevfs not supported by kernel

I don't want to rely on the configuration script for my connection, but I can't work out what that script is doing that the /etc/init.d/speedtouch script isn't. I'd appreciate any advice.

I got the modem working again (in a different way) by following the instructions found here:
http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/...ke/index.html. Hope they help someone else too.

Oddly, the MTU is now very high ... 32725. Changing it to 1500 with "ifconfig" seems to make the connection unstable. Adding "mtu 1500" to the peers file called by "pppd call (whatever_file)" has no effect ... pppd reports "Cannot set mtu to 32725" ... but it does.

Moreover, this has a knock on effect on a connection sharing Windows XP machine ... it can no longer share the internet connection.

Help appreciated!
