Question speed comparison

after spending time on squid and iptables i found that

iptables mean linux treated as router (masquerade) work fast as compare to squid proxy server
why i don't know

on client side i checked this speed
when ever i open yahoo through masquerade , the side opens with in
6 seconds (average) on dial up speed
but when i chage the browser setting to proxy seting , the speed decrase to 10 to 15 and some time more than 18 seconds on the same site.

what is this ?

without cache speed is fast why ?

as a router the machine processes layer 3 only .. as http server it's an app server and goes up another layer or two
+ it adds a layer in the ack's ..

dear that is not the answer of above question
i know routing is at layer 3

but i want to increase the speed of squid upto or at least equal to masquerade

why squid is not giving me the speed.
squid has cache and masquerade is not then why masquerade has faster speed as compare to squid

dear i am really confuse this aspect of squid
my squid.conf configuration is normal mean no delay pool and other bandwidth controll options
then why ???
