Some FTP and Apache questions

I have been running apache 2.0.44 on a Win2K machine for a while, and I am now trying to switch the server over to Linux. I have some Linux experience, but not an overabundance... Basically I really need help setting up an FTP server, an SSH server, and getting Apache locked down. I know that is a large endeaver for one thread, so any links to good documentation or tutorials would be much appreciated... thanks

For ftp and Apache there are gui apps that allow you to set them up easily.

Look at comanche (spelling may be wrong) for apache.

Cant remember what the ftp util is called but RH7.2 has it in the system tools under gnome.

try webmin @ www.webmin.com - works on almost all linux distro.

Suggestion: if you're gonna run ssh anyway,
why bother with ftp? Take sftp.

BTW: RH just notified me that there is
a (absolutely very complicated-looking)
vunerability in OpenSSL, which they have fixed
recently, so get the latest version.

This is probably a silly questions, but would it take an excess of technical prowess for the users of the sites I host to use sftp to access their directories? Or does an SSH server have the capacity to function as an FTP server as well... All the people whos sites I host are on Windows machines... I guess I need to read up on SSH ( i have never used it), but in the meantime I am going with either ProFTP or WU FTP... SO basically do I just run the FTP server, and then create on my Linux box user accounts for all those whos sites I host? (with their web directory set as their home directory) Basically I am very new to Linux webserving, but I am excited to get it going and maintain it...:p

FTP and SFTP

I don't know about an SSH client for windows, but there must be one out there somewhere. While you make your decision, keep in mind that FTP is a very insecure way of transfering files, particularly because it's pretty easy for someone who is listening to pick up users' passwords. If at all possible, I would go with SFTP and only use FTP for anonymous downloads.

I was asking around on the apache IRC channel, and I pretty much heard the same... "use ssh or webdav"... So I am going to go with SSH for the time being... But I will be doing that for the first time, so expect more posts from me...:(

On download.com, you can dnld a copy of SSH or securecrt which both work with ssh. You can also, If you feel comfortable enough, use telnet ;). Also, check out SSH's website for a free client, but I don't know about a free server, but either way, most linux distro's come with sshd.

yeah, I got ssh working and I found a great client called winscp (it is perfect for what I needed). The people I host sites for are going to use winscp, and I am using putty to access the server. I really like SSH and am glad that I was turned onto it... Now if I can just get vhosts to work...

wldkos 04-06-2003 01:12 AM

would you happen to have a link to that program? I just tried using securecrt right after i posted this and i couldn't connect to my machine.

b_usa 04-06-2003 01:56 AM

I dont mean to sound like a di*k, but did you try a google search for "winscp"? Its the first listing... It would have been easier for you, thats the only reason I point this out. Heres a link to that prog, but if you couldnt conect with the other Im wondering if maybe its something else. well see if this works first... heres the link http://winscp.vse.cz/eng/

wldkos 04-06-2003 03:03 AM

dick you are, and thanks for the link.

b_usa 04-06-2003 03:21 AM

Im a dick for trying to help you find a file faster than typing in a post on a BB? Like instead of typing the word 'winscp' in Google and getting the right file listed right at the top all bread and butter like? Dick I may be but dumb you definitely are...

b_usa 04-06-2003 03:23 AM

PS IF youre serious about calling me a dick after I helped you out Im not helping your punk a$$ no more homey...

Dont let that newbie sh*t fool you dawg, back at L.N.O. I ran sh*t. All the other L.N.O.ers may not agree, or even remember me, or actually never even have heard of me, but I distinctly remember otherwise...
