Unhappy SNMP Service

Hello my friends,

Sorry for the general question but i already use the: rpm -qa |grep snmp command to install the following files:

net-snmp-devel-5.0.9-2.30E.15
net-snmp-libs-5.0.9-2.30E.15
net-snmp-5.0.9-2.30E.15

I was trying to add this DELL Server to my CACTI server in order to monitor it but i always got an SNMP ERROR, i dont know if the SNMP service is running so could you please let me know how can i activate the SNMP service using the CLI????

I will appreciate it very much!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance.

Jorge

I don't run a rpm-based server; but on my systems the command to start snmpd is:
Code:
/etc/init.d/snmpd start
If that does not exist, you may want to look if you have the SNMP server installed, or just the client programs (every distro packages the components differently).

The snmpget command can be very helpful in debugging problems with the snmp service. For more info on how to use snmpget, run:
Code:
man snmpget

And for adding a snmp user so Cacti can query the agent for data you can use net-snmp-config:
Code:
# net-snmp-config [OPTIONS]
check man net-snmp-config.

Then configure snmp to define which version (v1, v2c, v3) you will use for this user and add it to Cacti also. I don't know if you have already done that...
