SNMP only updating every 12 seconds.

Hi All,

I have enabled SNMP monitoring in my debian box (using apt-get install snmp) and configured it to allow my PC to query the server.

I'm able to query the server and get SNMP data but when I get STG to give me a per/second graph of the interface octets, it only updates the data every 12 seconds or so.

Is this a setting in SNMP which could be causing this problem? If so, how can I enable it so that SNMP can give me up to the second octet rates.

Thanks
Anubis.

I am not understand this part?
Are you using any monitoring tool to monitor server? Can you provide some more details of that?

Generally SNMP receiver pull data from ANMP client. As i know there is no settings on SNMP client side to send data to server on specific time.

Hi Sem007,

Thanks for the replies.

It still appears that it's a problem with the linux server as STG is working properly for the cisco router that the server's connected to.

See the attached images.

STG.jpg is a shot of the SNMP output while monitoring the eth0 interface on the linux server, see it spikes every 12 seconds or so with the difference in data.

STGGood.jpg is a shot of the port on the Cisco router that the server's connected to showing that the actual image on the linux server should look like.

What it appears is if the data the SNMP on the linux server is getting is being cached for 12 (or x) seconds and the spikes are caused by the this caching of data.

Not sure, I've never seen it before and it seems a strange issue.

Thanks
Anubis.

Hi Sem007,

I just checked on the log file for STG and it actually shows that STG is getting zero's instead of the correct rates. This is even stranger.

Thanks.
Anubis.
