telnet <smtp-servername> 25

What do you get? You should also check your /var/log/messages for failure notices.

when i execute iptables -L

I get the following

/lib/modules/2.14.19-16mdk/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptables.o.gz:init_module device or resource busy
hint:insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameter, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
you may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

modprobe:insmod /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptables.o.gz failed
modprobe:insmod ip_tables failed
iptables v1.2.6a:cannot initailaize iptables table filter: iptables who?do you need to insmod

prehaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded
