SMC8014WG router does not allow outside connection to public ip
 
My router is an old SMC that rogers gave us that I've been fighting with for ages. I'd like to be able to ssh to my laptop from some other computer using my public IP, and I'd like to set up an FTP server, but every time I try to set up port forwarding (which, to be honest, I don't really know how to do, I'm following online instructions), I face unexplainable obstacles that either have no documentation or are caused by little green leprechauns who are trying to aggravate me:

1. My router claims that this is an 'Illegal port!', or
2. When I check the box to activate the port forwarding (like my router's help page says to do), all it does is refresh the page and uncheck the box.

Every time I search for online help about my router, everyone says to replace it because SMC sucks. I'd like to avoid replacing it, mind you, and if anyone has been able to figure how to appropriately configure this kind of router, I would really like to know how to do it. And if to get around this problem does require me to replace my router, could anyone tell me why port forwarding doesn't work with one router but might with another?

Yes, those were the first that I tried. On page 21, it also talks about MAC filtering, but I don't know what that is. Is that what you were showing me?

No I wasn't talking about MAC filtering. I was talking about what you probably already tried. MAC filtering just means that you only allow DHCP clients based upon their MAC address.

I know it sounds silly, but have you tried accessing the router's page w/IE? Some webserver sites are written in an IE vacuum, and don't work well w/other browsers.

Too bad you can't use something like Tomato or DD-WRT as a replacement firmware/OS for that router. Apparently, neither of them support SMC routers.

I guess it's just time to get a new router; the ie page is identical to what I see in chrome
