Angry smbclient is driving me nuts!

I don't get this.

I type in smbclient -L \\\\HOUSE
and it lists my shares.

I type in smbclient \\\\HOUSE\\\\SHARE

It finds it, and asks for a password.

Then it hits me with

NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME

I am using Samba 2.4 smbclient to connect to a Windows XP box

first off, XP handles the network file connections a lil differently than any other version of windows. i've had some similar problems of being prompted for passwords. haven't really figured it out yet either....

and you also might wanna try using this as your path: "\\\\machine\\share". you only need two \s for the share, since it's supposed to look like this: "\\machine\share". give that a try and see if it helps.

This could also be can issue of name resolution. Try putting an entry for your Linux box in your XP system's HOSTS file.

I had a similar problem:

>smbclient //hqqc/ -W MY_DOMAIN -U dwatson
The it asked my password and I got the error message:
" tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME "

To fix it I typed
>smbclient //hqqc/users -W MY_DOMAIN -U dwatson

Then I connected fine. I guess the / directory was not shared. I hope that helps.

try changing your hostname

try changing your hostname... I had a big dsl-234-234-234-234.myhost.com hostname and as soon as I changed the hostname with a "hostname smallername" it seemed to work for me.

Maybe that will help.

[SOLVED] well, at least one solution

I got this error when my host's /etc/samba/smb.conf entry for the share I was trying to connect to pointed to a directory that didn't exist.
