Question smbclient help

I'm trying to get my samba box to display a message to a client on a network.

ie: smbclient -M [clientname]

It gets a postitive name query starts to set up the session then exitswith message "session request failed".

Anyone with any ideas why this is happening?

You can't send a windows pop up messege to a client unless that client has the Messenger service running. If I am not mistaken I belive that it is disabled by default on Windows XP.

It's been a while since I used 98, but yes, I believe you can send to 98se as is. Unless I am mistaken, 98se has messenger service enabled by default.

winpopup

i found that the messenger service(winXp) is same as winpopup service under win98. its default
action is disable. winpopup is an app. in win98 (system or system32) .start > run > winpopup..
linux user only can send msg to win98 user if the winpopup is running.

Hrm, I could have swarn winpopup was enabled by default on 98. I thought I remebered it being considered a security issue because it was on and most users didn't know about it.... Oh well, it's been like like 6 years since I used 98 so I'm a bit rusty
