SMB slow from XP to Linux over dialup

I am connecting to a Red Hat linux server from a Windows XP Pro machine via a dialup. I have a drive mapping configured and it all works as expected except it is really slow. When trying to download 5 2K files the Connection status shows about 40K is actually getting downloaded. IP connection to an app on the Linux server works fine no problems. Problem seems to be with SAMBA. Has anyone got any idea's for me please ...
