i'm trying to learn how to set up samba. i've managed to set up folders, users etc. but the smb service wont start. i'm using FC5 by the way. when i try to start smb i get a [fail] message. i've tried from the command line and from the service gui. the command line gives me the fail, the gui locks up. the firewall is off. any ideas or more info would be appreciated.
Also did you run a test on your config? That often points out errors. For a while I was getting failed, and then I tested the configuration and came up that "use client driver =" was uncommented but I hadn't setup the printer with samba yet. Anyways, I recommend that first:
testparm -v smb.conf
the testparm seems to be okay. smb fails on boot, and refuses to start thereafter
heres the guts of the log specific to smbd, it looks a little scary to me. i hope you can help

theres plenty more where this came from, but this site won't allow me to post as it reckons i have sent more than 12 images???
Looks like SELinux. I know that in FC5 you can switch it off for certain daemons. In gnome, have a lookm under security settings (the place where you turn the firewall on/off) and look at the SELinux tab.
I'm pretty sure that will be at least part of the issue
i turned SELinux off and still have the prob. when the firewall loads on boot, it loads an extra module called ip_conntrack_netbios. has this anything to do with it. Also should i try to uninstall samba and reinstall??
i have selinux disabled in the following file - /etc/sysconfig/selinux
i'm open to all ideas, although a fresh install of the OS might be easier.
thanks
