installed RPM. slmodem no carrier

I installed the smartlink-softmodem-2.9.10-18.rpm.
no problems at al.
BUT
when I start up the modem:
Code:
# slmodemd --country=SOUTHAFRICA /dev/tty (/dev/ttySL0 gives error)
Smartlink Soft Modem: version 2.9.10 Sep 28 2005 15:40:20
symbolic link '/dev/ttySL0' -> '/dev/pts/2' created.
modem 'tty' created. TTY is '/dev/pts/2'
Use '/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination
so this look good i think..

The I start KPPP and set modem device as /dev/ttySL0

when I start dialing I get 'modem ready' then 'modem initializing' then 'no carrier' signal back

when I ask for a Query I get al the ATI information. I can enter the modem with a terminal as wel!
help...
