small home network M$ & Debian

Hi everyone,

First, here is my environment:
1) Network router D-Link D-624
2) workstation a) Windows XP box (IP 192.168.0.100)
3) workstation b) Debian SARGE (IP 192.269.0.101) with mySQL 4.11

Currently I'm fighting with the problem to connect from the XP box using mySQl query-browser to
mySQL hosted on the Debian box. When trying to establish the connection, I'm receiving an mySQL error #2003.

I added a user to mySQL for the host IP 192.168.0.100
When connecting to mySQL on the Debian box (itself), everything is fine.

It seems to me that the Debian box doesn't accept a connection on port 3306 for mySQL

I hope someone can give a quick help to solve the problem.

If the information I gave you shouldn't be sufficient, pls let me know
TIA
Fred

this doesn't appear to be a network question at all, sounds more like mysql isn't configured right, but it's possible you have a firewall running on the server. run "iptables -L" to list all current rules which could be blocking it. also i'd assume that mysql by default only listens on localhost. can you connect to mysql on the eth ip address on the box itself.?

hi Chris,

the iptables command shows the following listing

Quote:
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
I have no problem to connect to mySQL on the debian box itself.
I also added the host (192.168.0.100) to a user to mySQL.
As well as I open the port 3306 on the router between for the Ip range 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.199.

As you migth see, I'm not the most experienced linux user (yet). I just trying to get started

Any help much appreciated

TIA
Fred

Just try telnet on the port in which mysql is running.

#telnet host 3306

You should also check wether you have started mysqld with --slip-networking option. If it was started like that, you cannot connect to it using TCP/IP.

Just check the bind-address in the mysql configuration file (i.e /etc/mysql/my.cnf)
Just comment the line which binds it to localhost,

#bind-address = 127.0.0.1

Restart mysqld. Hope that it works.
