I've noticed my IP Masquaded network is experiencing really slow upload speeds. Uploading a large image (400K+) takes quite a while over my 56k connection.
The gateway machine is running Redhat 7.2, and I can't see anything wrong with the config. I have tried sending from various boxes on the network, with various operating systems.
The problem is evident in both FTP & Email. I am using passive ftp mode, but still no avail.
Can you be a bit more specific? Where are you uploading? If a 400K file takes 1 minute to upload to a host on your internal network, then you have a problem, but if it takes 1 minute to upload a 400K file to some Internet host, then at 56K that sounds about right.
Everything seems to be fine when transferring to local hosts on the internal network. However, transfers from an internal machine to any machine on the Internet over 56k connection are very, very slow. Sometimes they even time out.
It does not seem to be related to my ISP, as I have the problem with a few isps... Maybe someone else has similar experience.
Could a setting like MTU help this problem?
Thanks in advance!

Your MTU for a dial up should be somewhere around 500 (check this with ifconfig). Also, what happens if you try to send the file right from the computer directly attached to the internet?
Just checked then... I believe the same sort of thing happens from the gateway machine, when it uploads (at least when I try scp'ing something to an internet machine anyway).
