Unhappy Slow transfer rate into Linux server

I just recently installed a Netgear 10/100 Ethernet switch on my home office network. The problem I am having is slow data transfer into my Linux server from my Win2K client. I have run tests using three different machines: Linux host, Win2K #1, Win2K #2. The Linux host is a Slackware 9.0 distro, Linux 2.4.20. In doing my testing, I copy a 10Meg file from one machine to another. To remove the possibility of a mis-configured Samba install, I use FTP to & from the Linux server. The results of my tests go like this:

ftp from Win2K #1 to Linux Box ~ 157 secs.
ftp from Linux Box to Win2K #1 ~1.5 secs
ftp from Win2K #2 to Linux Box ~150 secs
ftp from Linux Box to Win2K #2 ~1.5 secs

Explorer copy from Win2K #1 to Win2K #2 ~1.5 secs
Explorer copy from Win2K #2 to Win2K #1 ~1.5 secs

There is a 2 order of magnitude difference in the Linux box receiving data vs. transmitting data. Can anyone shed any light on this subject for me? Anything would help.

Thank you.

Did you do some firewalling at one of the sides? Which FTP server are you using ?

All machines are internal and on a 192.168 network. I use the Linux box to do IP Masquerading, but I'm FTP'ing to the 192 address from a 192 address.

I'm using ProFTP, 1.2.8

I'm afraid I haven't resolved it. I believe it is at the application level, though. Since I do IP Masquerating, all my IP traffic goes through my Linux box. When downloading over my ADSL connection, I often get 150 -> 160K/sec downloads, which is 3 times faster than my FTP or Explorer connections.

Dan,

I just resolved this problem on my setup. The description of you problem sounds very much like mine. In order to make sure you are having the same problem run ifconfig
are there a large number of errors and carriers?

If so, then it the same problem as me. There are solutions to this problem:

1. Replace the NIC. There is a problem with a few NICs which result in a large number of mis-transmitted packets. In particular the Davicom 9102 series NICs have had issues with the tulip drivers. Here is a description of the issue:
http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/...9/11/0/2857358/

2. If you do have the Davicom 9102 series card, go to:
http://www.davicom.com.tw/eng/download/driver.htm and download the Linux drivers for your card. If you do not have a Davicom, figure out what NIC you have and download the drivers directly from the manufacturer.

Hope this helps.
