slow network

mandriva 2007.1 here.

i have several boxes, all running the same gigabit network
cards from trendnet. all the boxes are also very similar,
if not identical. all were set up to perform the same tasks
and, so, were set up with the same os and version and
options... i thought.

problem is, when transferring files, one box runs about
three times faster than the others.

how do i troubleshoot this to try to bring the slower boxes
in line with the faster one?

swapping cables around doesn't seem to change this behaviour.

thanks,
BabaG

Hi.

Try 'ethtool eth0' on each box (eth1, eth2 etc if it's multihomed) to check that all the machines' cards are running at full speed.
You might want to check the output from 'ifconfig' for errors/collisions too.

thanks ilikejam.

all cards seems to be running at full speed as per ethtool.
likewise, ifconfig shows no collisions or errors.

now what?

thanks again,

Next place to look would be the drives - check 'hdparm -I /dev/sdX' and make sure the highest available DMA mode is switched on everywhere.
Might be worth running a timed read on each box with 'hdparm -tT /dev/sdX' to see what the drives are capable of too.
