Slackware Networking

I am fairly new to linux and have not yet been using it 6 months. I have however finally decided to stick with slackware and got everything working nicely with a windoze/linux 2 comp network.

However, I found the 2.4.5 kernel which came with slack8.0 and decided to install it, and now it won't detect the network card.

Tried netconfig (which failed to probe the network card) and rc.inet1 is still intact. Ping won't find the other comp.
Using a network card with the realtech chipset and rather baffled about this now :(

I don't fully understand... But have you compiled your kernel? If yes, maybe you've forgotten to insert the right nic module.
What is your nic card?

Thanx anyway, but it's working now, I think I forgot somthing when I installed the kernel.

I do have another question tho.
Trying to use smbmount to mount a win98 filesystem as a user... but I get an error saying only root can do that...

I'm trying

$ smbmount //soxnet/cdrive netc -o guest

soxnet is the name of my other comp, and netc is the folder ~/netc

I tried under root too, but I get:

ERROR: smbfs filesystem not supported by the kernel
Please refer to the smbmnt(8) manual page
smbmnt failed: 255

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong?

Do you have a RealTek (8319too) network card? if so, I think kernel 2.4.5 's driver for that card has problem. I read that from some old post in this forum a while ago. Anyway, when I upgrade to kernel 2.4.18 everything is fine.

Yes is it realteck, and I had to redo some stuff (not sure what did it), but it's working now with 2.4.5.

My only prob now is samba which is not recognising fat32 for mounting on a network for some reason. :(
